Anna Ruchat made her debut as a writer at the age of 45 after many years of intense and tireless work translating from German (in particular Klemperer's diaries and the novels of Thomas Bernhard). In these dense narratives she at once discovered her personal brand of writing – a laconic narrative tissue profoundly in touch with life. Between the intimate account of a miscarriage («Weisse Trauer») and the poetic turmoil of the experiences of a wandering tailor («Die beiden Türen der Welt»), she inserts a long narrative of intense polyphony, «Die Ballade der Soldaten ohne Waffen». To the verses of a famous song by Georges Brassens unfolds an elegy in remembrance of all those who have given up too early, «in cruel remembrance nothing other shall remain than the shining eyes of a child that could have become anything».
